BEYOND BEETHOVEN 2021
Beyond Beethoven 2021 reimagines the cycle of 16 string quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven by using this music as a galvanizing force to disrupt the traditional model of classical music presentation and music education by bringing together at least seven presenting organizations and educational institutions from diverse communities that do not normally intersect. During the Fall of 2021, the Quartet will be performing all sixteen Beethoven Quartets and eight works of living composers (Michi Wiancko, Jessie Montgomery, Caroline Shaw, Tan Dun, Osvaldo Golijov, Eric Gould, Dinuk Wijeratne and Gabriela Lena Frank), over eight public and live-streamed concerts in major performance venues across Cuyahoga County through our partnerships with the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, Temple-Tifereth Israel, Arts Renaissance Cleveland, Cleveland State University, The Music Settlement, and Severance Hall. At the heart of the Beyond Beethoven is interaction through individual lessons and group coaching over Zoom in-person (as permitted) rehearsals for participant students from three Cuyahoga County public schools, as well as interactive Cavani performances open to all students (online or in-person). Each residency performance will consist of music from two of Beethoven’s sixteen string quartets and a piece by a living 21st Century composer.
