Pre K-12 Programs

Pre K-12 Programs

Deeply committed to the teaching of chamber music, the Cavani Quartet has developed a series of educational and outreach programs for a wide variety of settings and for audiences of all ages. The following programs are available in addition to the programs designed for your special needs.

Preschool Programs (Grade K-2)

Our early education programs are designed to introduce very young children to string instruments using story book fables and poetry set to music and brought to life by the Cavani Quartet. Fairy tales include “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and poetry includes verses from “Winnie the Pooh” by A.A. Milne. The children are treated to a medley of music from Mozart to “Pop goes the Weasel” and are able to interact freely with members of the quartet. This program can range in time from 20 – 40 minutes and should take place in an intimate setting. Recommended for ages Pre-K – 2nd grade, this program is fun for adults as well as children.

Team Up With Music© (Grade 3-5)

Team Up With Music illustrates the fundamentals of teamwork and sharing while creating an appreciation of the artists, their instruments and their music. Drawing a connection between group activities as seemingly diverse as sports and chamber music, the program creates a fast-paced, fun, and interactive atmosphere featuring repertoire ranging from Beethoven to Bruno Mars. Recommended for grades 3 – 5, “Team Up With Music” can take place in a classroom, cafeteria, library, gymnasium, choir room, or any facility that will accommodate closeness of audience to the performers.

Outside The Box (Grade 6-12)

Outside The Box programs are designed specifically for middle and high school age audiences. This highly interactive program provides students with the opportunity to respond and dialogue with members of the quartet on a wide variety of subjects relating to music including interpretation, compositional techniques, career development, social and historical context, and rehearsal techniques. This program brings the students into the very essence of the live chamber music experience and features a broad spectrum of music chosen from masterpieces from 18th-21st centuries, including genres of jazz and rock and roll. These programs are best for audiences of 100 or less, and work well in an intimate setting i.e., choir, orchestra, band room or library. Great for non-music or music classes alike.

The Art of Listening (grade 6-12)

The Art of Listening develops imaginative new ways of listening to music by engaging the active participation of the listener’s other senses and perceptions.Using references to the visual arts and other disciplines, the program invites the audience to share its responses to different selections of music. The program is an ideal experience for young people from middle school through high school and is especially appealing to family audiences.

The Cavani Quartet in Erie’s Public Schools

“When you have a group that makes children enthusiastic about music in general, and string quartets in particular, they must be doing something right. The Cavanis are that kind of group. I have seen them in action and was very impressed. Hooray for the Cavani Quartet!”

– Itzhak Perlman

Conversations with Cavani

Conversations with Cavani are informal concerts for all ages presenting selections of traditional quartet repertoire along with commentary from the Quartet. These 30 – 40 minute programs promote interest in full-length public concerts and bring live music to those otherwise unable to come to the concert hall. The Cavani Quartet has offered “Conversations with Cavani” for schools, service clubs, retirement centers, hospitals, correctional institutions, and countless other community organizations.

Adult Chamber Music Workshop “For the love of it!”

Adult Chamber Music Workshop is an adult amateur chamber music workshop which brings together non-professional musicians in the community to share in the process of studying repertoire, coaching intensively with members of the Cavani String Quartet, participating in a master class, and performing in a recital setting. Participants experience a unique opportunity to cultivate mastery of their instruments and to develop tools of expression and communication in a positive and encouraging atmosphere.
